I had the honor of photographing and taking video of Operation Inasmuch in Fayetteville, NC this past weekend. The community of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church came together and had a field day of all sorts of activities from providing car check ups, making bags of goodies to pass out, and even repairing a roof. You can see all the action in the photos and videos below.

Giles Blankenship’s CD Launch Party

Most of the jobs I’m on are brought to me by word of mouth. However, there are some jobs where I’m interested in and take action to make contact with the event planner, coordinator, or even – the artist/model/performer themselves (a bold move some would say). Sometimes you have to risk it to get the biscuit.

I’m glad Giles Blankenship agreed to let me shoot his recent CD launch party. Giles used this event as a way to thank everyone in the community who supported him over the years and who made his new release “The Day is Dawning” possible. Be sure to check out his work.

Recap: Backstage at Tim Johnson’s Fashion on South West

Fashion shows are intense. There is always something going on all the time: hair, make up, wardrobe, and being on standby. You have to be ready at a moment’s notice. You cannot miss your cue.

Shooting backstage at Tim Johnson’s show gave me a different perspective on how everything works. I was privileged to see Tim Johnson at work and run the show in a way most photographers wouldn’t be able to see. I learned a lot about his leadership style from observing how he delegates, resolves conflicts, and inspires his creative team.

In the video recap below you’ll see some backstage stills and photos taken on a white background. I was fortunate enough to set up a small studio space to shoot photos. At most I had about 1 minute with each model before they had to head out in the runway. It was fast, intense, and I loved it. Thanks FStoppers and King Street Studios for the inspiration.

150th Civil War Commemoration – Union Occupation of Ft. Macon

Going back in time is a lot of fun. Reliving history, disguising in old gear, while making sure I don’t step in any butterflies. The Civil War is one of America’s greatest and bloodiest battles. I got to be right in the middle of the battle.

The gear I wore was loaned to me by David Henkel who gracious let me tag along on this second adventure of reliving Civil War history. David has been reenacting and collecting various Civil War era gear for years with the Cape Fear Living History Society. Everything that I wore was collected from years of careful hunting, traveling to overseas areas, and handcrafting. Everything was so durable and flexible which helped me take photos out on the battlefield.

Here’s a quick video recap of the battle on the beach with night artillery fire.

Decided to try out some manual free-lensing on the beach. Risky, but I like the results.

There were some great outfits from the guys and ladies. There are some of them.

This was my outfit. Man that wool was itchy.

I’m happy to be apart of something great in Fayetteville. I’ll be working with a group of local creative artists to help give our community an opportunity to have their portrait made with Help Portrait.

Photos mean a lot to people. They eternalize the feelings of joy, happiness, love, and peace. They also contain our cherished memories with the people we love. HP has found that there are those who have never had a family photo or never had a photo of themselves. Fayetteville’s Help Portrait will be giving an opportunity for these people to get their chance.

Rejoice! Hair & Fashion Show

I had the opportunity to shoot my second fashion show a couple weekends ago in Fayetteville, NC for a charity fashion show. All proceeds went to the local Stop Child Trafficking chapter. If you are interested in helping out Stop Child Trafficking please visit SCTNow.org.

Otakon 2011 Recap

Otakon was a lot of fun this year. I got to meet a lot of cool cosplayers and other photographers. That were at the event. The creativity level went up this year from the last time I was here 2 years ago.

I took photographing the day differently than what other photographers were doing. I started out doing street photography around the convention as people were making their way from various hotels and parking lots. I then went inside to look for natural light around patios, windows, and terraces to shoot cosplayers. Around sunset I pulled out the speedlights to try out some night shots.

I like working with cosplayers because they already have an idea of what their character should be. That starts as our baseline. Then we can move into crazier stuff involving their props.

It was a hot humid day in Titusville on the last shuttle launch of the STS135. I really feel bad for the kids that will be growing up in the next generation who want to be astronauts. They’ll have to learn that their dreams cannot be reached and will have to pick a new dream. So sad.

On a happier note there were nothing but smiles and excitement as families gathered together to watch this shuttle launch. Some of the locals tell me they’ve seen all the shuttle launches in their lifetime and are sad that this is the last one. It was a truly remarkable event to be seen.

Titusville is a couple of miles away from the launching pad, but at Kennedy Point Park you can get a great view despite the distance. The best seat in the house was in the water.
